1928 : Willow is used to construct the 'afsluitdijk' to stabilise the stones.

The same techniques are still being used.

A 'Dobbe' is a dug out pond often found in the northern area of the Netherlands. The dug out soil is used to create a wall around the pond. While this is originally done to create a drinking place for cattle when the salt water rises (the fresh water inside the pond floats on top of the salt water), it has also proven to be an essential element in the landscape to find safety when waterlevels rise.

A house of religion in Iraq made from reed.

Living on floating islands of reet. Constantly adding layers, harvested from the surroundings. A dependance on the health of the surrounding ecosystem.

Sound isolating domes made of reed near highway. (waiting for trees to grow and take over this function).

AmperDesign// Visiting the youngest part of the Netherlands 'de markerwadden'. A constructed island as a haven for ecology to catch a breath in the monoculture of the waters and coasts surrounding it.

Even though it only exists for a couple of years, the island is full of life. Pioneering species of plants, birds and life under water.
